"Windows 10 external hard drive asking to format ",I know this is a long shot but I really need some advice, please. I backed up all my files from my old computer which was a dell Inspiron windows 7. I put them on my external hard drive which is a verbatim 1 tb that plugs into USB port and gets power from a cord plugged into the wall. Everything went fine. I bought a new computer yesterday that is a dell with windows 10 since the previous one did not survive a reformatting. Anyways my new computer is all set up but when I plug in my external hard drive it says it needs to format it and can't access it. Otherwise everything's fine, no physical damage and no bugs were ever evident until now. I plugged it into my friend's computer which has windows 7 and it asked to format it on his too. Is everything lost? Can I give the drive a new letter or something? How does that work?

There are more than 80% people in this world who are using Windows systems. Yes, Windows systems are really powerful and easy to use. It sets nearly all default settings for users, so people don't need to set them one by one. Here comes a big problem: among these users, most of them don't know how to change Windows settings to meet their own special requirements.Reinstalling Windows may not lead to permanent data loss. Lost files can be recovered with data recovery software unless the lost files are overwritten. If you want to recover lost files after reinstalling Windows, please stop using the hard disk and make sure you do not save any data to the hard disk, as this would cause data to be overwritten and permanent data loss. Once the data is overwritten, it is little chance to recover lost files after reinstalling Windows by any data recovery software.
